If you think there’s no such thing as too much information when it comes to weather, this is your new favorite app. Windy.com is one of the most interactive and customizable weather tools out there, pooling and visualizing global data. Before you dive in, here are a few tips for navigating this feature-packed forecaster.

To get the most out of Windy, set up a profile. This will enable you to save favorite locations and personalize your home screen. You’ll also need a profile if you’re looking to chat with the community or upgrade your account.

Settings might not be your usual first stop when exploring a new app, but it should be with Windy. To ensure you’ll be able to make sense of what you see, select the data formats you're comfortable with. Choose between Celsius and Fahrenheit, millimeters and inches, types of wind pressure, and more.

When you open the app, you’ll see a weather map of your general area. Pinch to zoom out, swipe to move around the globe, or tap the magnifying glass to search for a specific location. Once you select a spot on the map, you’ll find basic weather information like wind and temperature. Feeling lost? Tap the three stacked bars above the magnifying glass and choose “Find my location” to be whisked back to your present site.

Note: Pressing the home button returns you to your current location, but removes any of your current search settings and layers; they’ll remain intact with the “Find my location” function.

Now it’s time to dig into what makes Windy special: layers. When you press the home icon, you’ll find standard stats like temperature, wind, and precipitation atop your map. Tap the three bars to choose what you want to visualize, and select “More layers” to explore options like UV index, snow depth, solar power, and tidal currents. Hit the play button at the bottom of the screen for a pausible time lapse of present and future conditions.

Tip for you storm chasers: If you choose the weather radar layer (thunderstorm icon), your phone will actually vibrate every time lightning flashes on the map!

To add data to the map in addition to your chosen layer, tap the three stacked bars and scroll down to Display on map. Here you’ll find options for viewing active fires, kitesurfing spots, air quality, and even radiation. Tap one of the associated icons on the map to get specific information for that spot.

One of the coolest features at your fingertips is access to the latest data on hurricanes around the globe. When you select the hurricane tracker layer, Windy will take you to the nearest storm, providing information on its wind speed, pressure, category, and trajectory.
