Cornelia Funke, multiple award-winning author, has won the hearts of children across the globe with her vividly imaginative worlds. How did your previous career as a social worker shape the books you’ve illustrated and written?

ThiefLord is my love song to the children I met while being a social worker. I felt like a traitor when I left to become an illustrator and writer. But I learned that you can’t live against your talents. And magically now I can support many social workers all over the world - and write books that give comfort to many children who face a tough life and sometimes only find shelter between my words.

Is there a character within your own writing that you feel closest to?

Yes, definitely Fox from the Reckless series. Although I didn’t lose my very kind mother at a young age and didn’t grow up with a violent step father! Nevertheless, Fox is so close to me and I wish I had her fur dress and could become a vixen each time human existence becomes too exhausting.

What do you hope your young readers take away from your books?

Hope. Shelter. Courage.

Which literary characters inspired you when you were a young reader?

Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, the characters of Michael Ende , the Brothers Lionheart of Astrid Lindgren and all the children from the Narnia Books. Then later on, The Once and Future King by T.H.White.

What’s your all-time favourite book?

The Once and Future King, The Princess Bride, The Brothers Lionheart, East of Eden and… oh, there are too many!
